In post-WWII Russia, one boy dares to save an entire race of outlawed dogs -- the German shepherd!
World War II has just ended when thirteen-year-old Mikhail finds a dying man and his German shepherd, Zasha, in the woods. It's dangerous -- some say traitorous -- to own a German dog after Germany attacked Russia, so Mikhail must keep Zasha a secret to keep her alive.
But Mikhail's rival, Katia, is determined to find the dog she is sure he's hiding. At the same time, a soldier named Dimitri is breeding a new Russian dog at a nearby farm. So many dogs were lost in combat, to starvation, and in the slaughter of German dogs that the country is in dire need of every kind of dog.
Dimitri, too, has suspicions of Zasha's existance, and would like nothing more than to add her to his breeding program. He'll have to compete with the armed dog thieves who are also on her trail.
Mikhail's inspiring journey to save his best friend, the last German shepherd in Russia, forces him to face some of life's hardest lessons about war, hate, forgiveness, hope, love, and man's best friend.

After reading Where the Red Fern Grows and Old Yeller, I've kind of been ruined on dog stories so I was skeptical when a friend suggested this book to me. But she was a friend and I hadn't read any of her book suggestions yet so I thought, "Welp, let's try it." And I did. And it was so worth it! I couldn't predict the ending of the book and the characters were great!Product details

Saving Zasha edition by Randi Barrow Children eBooks Reviews
I didn't realize this was a children's book, so for me, it wasn't real enjoyable. But for a child, or classroom, it would be a good read.
good reading for the younger crowd dog lovers
My ten year old ordered this book because he enjoys books about animals and their stories. He got half way through this book and said he didn't want to finish it because it was too intense. We are putting it away until he is ready for this story.
I am middle aged and usually read murder mysteries, but I checked out Saving Zasha when I saw it at the library. It is sad, funny, fast paced and worthwhile reading for aging sentimental fools. If you enjoy a good world war two story, this may interest you, too. I ordered copies for myself and a dog loving friend before I'd finished the second chapter. The dog on the cover cannot be the beautiful Zasha, though.
My son read Finding Zasha first, and is now reading Saving Zasha. My 9 yr old son loves the books so much that he can't stop reading, I have to force him to put it away and turn out the light. The story line is perfect for his age group - historical fiction, war, a 'hero boy', dogs. I love that it's a good book that's teaching him some history while exciting him about reading. I sincerely hope this author will write more books!
I think you should read Saving Zasha if you can handle heartbreaking moments and then move on. Another great reason to read Saving Zasha is if you are looking for a dog because in the back of the book it tells you all about a great dog breed. But we should get back to the story. So a young boy finds a man dying in the woods with a German Shepherd. But don't forget it's right after World War 2. Anyways they take the man in. His name is Petr. They try to save him but the next morning they can't do anything, he's gone. So they keep Zasha and have absolutely wonderful adventures. (Review written by Ella. Dad helped.)
Very good book I thought finding zasha was first so I read it first but, what doesn't make sense is it mentions that zasha is pregnant but does not mention the birth of the puppies. why doesn't the author include that Ivan (the young police officer from the police station remembered him because the captain says for Ivan and lev to put Petr's dead body somewhere) recognizes Petr because he used to be a partisan in Petr galina polina and auntie's group so why didn't Ivan remember him he said (back in finding zasha) he fought so long and so hard it couldn't be possible that he died because of what a strong leader petr was to him. I am almost positive Ivan promised to find zasha and petr.I investing that irina is really polina.
